Aquaculture is one of the developing sectors of the global economy and the growth has been aided so far by the government as well as the input of different young entrepreneurs.Â
Here are the top five youths in the aquaculture sector and brief detail on them:
ANGELA JULIANA ODERO is the CEO and Co-founder at Rio Fish Limited, a private limited company focused on solving the fish value chain challenges in Kenya with a strong social impact.Â
She is a numerate and experienced UK-trained Finance Professional with multicultural experience having worked in Kenya, UK, Uganda, and Mozambique with value-added experience in running Finance Functions and business investments. Her interest in aquaculture led to her first investment in the sector in 2014.
PROSCOVIA ALANDO is a social entrepreneur keen on transforming the Kenyan aquaculture industry to be sustainable and inclusive, especially for women and youth. She is the founder of Samaky Hub, a startup that offers consultancy to fish farmers, and the co-founder of Ressect, a startup specializing in farming black soldier flies as an alternative protein for animal feed. She plans to establish a circular farming system integrating fish, black soldier fly, and indigenous crops. Proscovia earned an MSc in Sustainable Aquaculture from the University of Stirling after winning a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship.
VICTORIA SOKOLAYAMEÂ EMMANUEL is the founder of Sokvikia Fisheries, runs a fish production, processing, and distribution business in Nigeria that aims to mainly sell to women who are concerned about food safety while promoting food security, nutrition, and employment opportunities. She grew up in an environment where fish farming is the predominant occupation. It is the passion to offer a solution to this scarcity that ignited her passion for aquaculture, which has significantly increased fish production in Nigeria.
PRECIOUS SANJAMA, a young entrepreneurial Malawian, grew up a stone’s throw from Lake Malawi, in the village of Mpondasi, Mangochi District, where each afternoon after primary school he went down to the lakeside to play with his friends, enjoying but also learning to respect, the nature of the region’s iconic lake. After school, he was accepted to the four-year fisheries science BSc course at Mzuzu University in the north of the country…
Precious has set up his own company, AquaLink Malawi, together with two friends from college. This specializes in supplying aquaculture equipment and other consultancy services to fish farmers all over Malawi. They import net materials and, together with local tailors, make up specialist hapas and seine nets which have already become good sellers across Malawi. Their product range is steadily increasing and now includes measuring boards, graders, waders, and feeding equipment. They have already attracted interest from the likes of WorldFish and GIZ to supply some of their projects.
OLUBUNMI AGBATO is the Chief Executive Officer of B-Spice Fish (a subsidiary of Bspice Products and services limited) in Oyo State.
She processes fish into 10 products which have attracted international grants for her business.
She is an Aquaculturist. She studied Aquaculture and Fishery Management at the University of Ibadan as an undergraduate and a postgraduate. She is still doing her research in the field. Tactically, she’s into food fish value addition, processing, marketing, and sales.Â
She has a fish farm comprising six ponds, two large ponds, and four smaller ponds with a capacity of 10,000 fish or about 10 tonnes weight fishes.
She is a member of the Fish Farmers Organization of Nigeria (FFON) and also the Fishery Society of Nigeria (FSN).
